N-Gage is dead, long live the Ovi Store - full of Symbian games

Nokia plans to shut down the N-Gage platform. It's all going down in September 2010 but the publishing of new games has stopped as we speak. The gaming on Nokia phones will continue evolving under the Ovi Store umbrella.

The website of N-Gage along with the N-Gage Arena community will be left running throughout the whole 2010, while the N-Gage store will continue selling games until September 2010. After that the only place to buy S40 or Symbian S60 games will be the Ovi Store, which will come preinstalled on all upcoming Nokia devices. Nokia also promises to bring similar community options for the apps in the Ovi Store.

Of course, all the N-Gage games you've purchased so far will continue to work long after that.

Well, the N-gage platform delivered some of the best mobile games we've seen for Symbian smartphones and we're quite surprised that Nokia is ditching all the development losing a strong differentiating factor. We'll see how it goes, let's hope it is all for the better.

Motorola CLIQ Android Phone

Motorola unveiled their first Android smartphone with the Motorola CLIQ.
T-Mobile will carry the CLIQ which comes with something called MOTOBLUR. MOTOBLUR is an solution that manages and integrates communications from work e-mail to social networking activity on your CLIQ.
Updates to contacts, posts, messages, photos and more are streamed together and synced from sources including Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, Gmail, and work and personal e-mail.
MOTOBLUR automatically delivers these updates to the home screen in easy-to-view streams so there is no need to open and close different mobile applications to keep up with the latest content.

Other features of the Motorola CLIQ include slide-out QWERTY keyboard, 3.1-inch HVGA touch-screen display, 5MP camera, and Wi-fi.

The Motorola CLIQ looks to become the hottest Android phone on the market.

Motorola CLIQ with MOTOBLUR will be available exclusively to T-Mobile customers later this fall in two colors — Titanium and Winter White. Pricing will be announced at a later date. Motorola Blur First Screenshots Or Android Market Update?

Over at CNET’s Android Atlas an anonymous source sent in two pictures of what appears to be a completely overhauled UI for Android Market complete with added functionality. In the screen shots you can clearly see a new, vibrant and colorful approach:As you can clearly see, the background color of the entire App Market display is white as opposed to the current black background and white text. Sorting options include Top Paid, Top Free and Just In with the search button being prominently displayed in the upper right. The category display lists apps that are available in the category in smaller/lighter text - I’m not crazy about this as it seems to clutter things up a bit. However, I like the idea of displaying recently searched or often searched keywords and other dynamic info.

According to the article, this Market view was running on a Donut build of Android and most blogs republishing this information say this is the Android Market we can all look forward to later this year. But can we? Seeing as how the leak comes only a week before the big Motorola Android event, perhaps we’re seeing a custom displayed version of the market offered by Motorola. We know they have their own unique offering called Motorola Blur and perhaps THIS is what we are seeing?

This possibility hadn’t been brought up yet and I thought it warranted a mention. I don’t have any information that would suggest one way or the other, but I think the idea that these COULD be the first screenshots of Motorola Blur is definitely a possibility. What do you think?

BlackBerry App World Now Available Via The Web

One of the big shortcomings of BlackBerry App World is that the only way to view the catalog of available applications was through the actual BlackBerry App World application on your device. There is no way to view App World via the Web.

This, at least, was the case until today as Research in Motion now allows you to browse the entire BlackBerry App World catalog via the web.

All BlackBerry App World applications must still be downloaded via the client on your BlackBerry, however, you can send yourself a link to any application that you browse via the web and would like to download. A nice feature to add would be the ability for you to log in and create an account. As App World gets bigger the ability for it to predict applications that you might like based on previous applications that you have downloaded would be beneficial.

Additionally, not all applications run on all BlackBerry devices so a section that tells you supported devices under each app would be nice. Maybe even highlight your device if supported and you are logged in. BlackBerry App World still has a long way to go, but, it is an awful lot better than what RIM initially launched.

RIM have just officially released OS 4.7.0.167 for the BlackBerry Storm 9500 series. Although we are a little unsure of what is actually new in this latest version.

I’m confident however, that you guys out there will let us know if and what if anything is new or different in the latest released OS download. The download claims to be giving users a improved SurePress typing experience, enhanced multimedia performance, faster browsing and rotation speeds and more.

The LG GD910 Watch Phone is available as of right now in France on Orange on a 12 or 24 month contract on an Origami star, first, jet, or Origami plus contract.

So will the LG GD910 make it big in the mobile phone arena at the asking price? We’re not too sure how far the LG GD910 will go carrying such a high price which puts it way beyond most ordinary peoples budget.

Sony Ericsson's Upcoming Android Phone

We've known for some time now that Sony Ericsson (SE) is working on a Google Android-based mobile phone, but the company has been keeping mum on details. However, pictures leaked by a Danish site appear to reveal Sony Ericsson's upcoming Android phone, and it looks like a good one.

Code-named Rachael, Sony Ericsson's Android phone will be announced later this year, according to information obtained by the Danish Mobil magazine. The phone will be part of SE's XPERIA series, which so far includes the Windows Mobile-based X1 model.

And as SE joined the Open Handset Alliance in December last year, it was shaping out quite clearly that the Swedish company would join the Android-running smartphone army. Mobil says that the Android-loving SE Rachel is based on the Qualcomm Snapdragon platform (QSD8250), wich would give the phone processor speeds of up to 1GHz and 7.2Mbit per second HSPA downlink speeds.

The leaked pictures also show the SE's upcoming Android phone featuring an 8.1-megapixel camera with autofocus and flash. At the top of the phone a 3.5mm headphone jack and a miniUSB port are also present. No specific details on the phone's display size or resolution were released, but the Dutch magazine says it has a pressure-sensitive touchscreen.

Some of the specifications of SE's Android phone are looking very good in comparison to other smartphones on the market today. An 8.1-megapixel camera would be most powerful on an Android handset yet, and remarkably better than the 3-megapixel camera on the latest iPhone 3GS. On the Android realm, the HTC Hero and the Samsung Galaxy have only a 5-megapixel camera.

It's highly likely that SE's Rachel will run on the upcoming 2.0 version of Google Android operating system, which is also expected to be released toward the end of this year. As for Adobe Flash, it is yet unclear whether this phone will feature this capability.

Okay, apparently the word from newsroom.mtv is that Lindsay Lohan has posted an image of herself on her personal Twitter using her BlackBerry Bold smartphone. Nothing unusual you may say, but Lindsay Lohan posted a “Topless” photo on Twitter via her BlackBerry twitter client TwitterBerry.

Don’t get too excited though as the photo is an old Fornarina fashion shoot picture, but still a nice photo with strategically placed hair we might add. One could hazard a guess that Lindsay Lohan was slightly bored at the time, but it does show what smartphone she prefers.

Samsung Galaxy gains hands-on and closest to iPhone yet

The Samsung Galaxy, Samsung's Google Android platform smartphone has gained a hands-on review by pcworld, and says the Samsung Galaxy is the closest thing yet to the Apple iPhone 3G.

The Samsung Galaxy features a 3.2 AMOLED touch screen along with a physical QWERTY keyboard, 5 megapixel camera with LED flash, GPS, WiFi, support for WCDMA networks, 7.2Mbps HSPA, and a standard audio jack.

The reviewer was impressed with the Samsung Galaxy's slimness being both slimmer than the Apple iPhone 3G and the HTC Magic. The Samsung Galaxy will be available in Germany and France by the end of this month and will become available elsewhere in the 2nd half of the year.

What Age Attracts the iPhone Most?

Most would think that the iPhone attracts the younger generation of mobile phone users, somewhere between the ages of 18 and 24 perhaps, but according to an article on Intomobile, this is not the case.

The findings of a new report by Nielson has shown that iPhone age use seems quite a varied affair, but rather than the iPhone being a mass attraction to the younger generation it looks to be more attractive to the mid life range of users in the age bracket of 35 to 54.

Not that it makes a real difference what age uses an iPhone, but it does appear than the iPhone isn't a technology limited to just the young.

BlackBerry Messenger Getting A Serious Overhaul

BlackBerry Messenger hasn’t really been significantly updated since it first came out years ago, however, judging by these pictures of an updated BlackBerry Messenger found over on BGR, the new BlackBerry to BlackBerry instant messaging platform has been completely overhauled.

Here is a list of just a few of the new features and enhancements:

Avatar support — set your own avatar using the Camera or saved photo on your device (this is displayed locally as well as shown next to your Messenger name on your friend's buddy list)
GPS location integration — you can now set permissions so friends can always see your location, have to request it each time, or never can see it
Proximity sensor — we're guessing this will let you know if you're within a certain distance of friends (pending, of course, you're both set to share locations freely with each other)
Set conversation subjects — this will allow you to organize your convos on the main Messenger screen and label them with subjects to keep track of all your conversations
Homescreen support — you can pin/sticky actual Messenger contacts directly to the homescreen for easy access!

I know that this is probably just wishful thinking but how great would it be if RIM offered a desktop client for BlackBerry Messenger? I’ll save the for another post.

Google Wave: How good is it for mobile smartphones?

Last week at the Google I/O conference, Google gave plenty of info on the next generation Android smartphones, but they also announced Google Wave, a new communications and collaboration tool which is under development reports courierpress.

Everyone uses instant messaging and email, and Google Wave looks to combine the teo and add even more. The basis of Google Wave is the user can create a "wave" to discuss a topic with numerous friends, colleagues and family.

The "wave" is a collaborative document and conversation used by several people at the same time and includes videos, maps, photos, rich text and chat, and anyone in the collaboration can edit, and reply on the wave.

Developers will be able to build applications into Google Wave such as Facebook and games such as Suduko and Mafia Wars. Google Wave isn't available yet but it's due later this year or early next year; however, I'm not too sure just how well it will do for mobile smartphones.

The up front cost of mobile phones isn't the only thing to consider when going purchasing your mobile handset for example there is the "total cost of ownership," and we have a "total cost of ownership" on the iPhone 3G S, Palm Pre and T-Mobile G1 as reckoned by billshrink.

Setting aside the T-Mobile G1, the more important comparison is between the two giants who are battling it out for supremacy, the 3G S against the Palm Pre, although the comparison with the G1 is still there to see.

Basically the bottom like in this particular comparison is that dollar for dollar the Palm Pre is the better option, but then again is it the better handset?

The iPhone 3G S Is No Big Deal

I don’t know… Maybe it is just me, but, I was expecting more from the iPhone 3G S. Is a better camera and MMS enough to make you replace the 3G you bought just last year? Has anything been added to the 3G S that will make that BlackBerry user that was holding out say “Now I am ready to get an iPhone”?

Personally I think that the Palm Pre will cause more trouble for RIM than the iPhone 3G S, but, that is for another post. I do believe, however, that the price drop on the iPhone 3G means that we will see a ‘ginormous’ number of iPhones sold this summer and that is probably a bigger problem for RIM than the technology in the iPhone 3G S.

There are so many mixed reactions at the moment with the all new Apple iPhone 3G S and of course OS 3.0 software, the announcement of the new iPhone and software came last night and with the price cut of the current 3G model we was wondering if people will stay with the current 3G version.

We was on the ball last night with WWDC 2009 last night and must say we are happy at some things and pretty disappointed about some things, ok so launching applications will be better and the new iPhone 3G S will be much faster, it does indeed have a better camera but is this enough?

O2 still has exclusivity in the UK and if you are already on a contract with your iPhone you will have to pay what's left running on your contract; for example if you still have 6-months left running you have to pay the full six months before upgrading to the new iPhone 3G S, so this could possibly mean many will opt out of the early upgrade.

Prices for an 18-month contract for the new phone will cost you £184.98 for the 16GB version and £274.23 for the 32GB version.

Ok the new iPhone does feature the likes of digital compass, voice recognition, improved data speeds, much better battery life, faster web browsing, ability to record and upload video to YouTube, data encryption, better graphics, five hours of talk time and nine hours of internet surfing and video camera but is this enough?

The new iPhone goes on sale in the UK on 19th of June and the 8GB iPhone 3G which will cost $99 from 19 June in the U.S, this price cut will not apply in the UK.

The all new software OS 3.0 will feature the likes of cut, copy and paste, tethering, upgrade to Safari and improvements in search and a few other bits. Please answer our poll below and get you vote in please.

The iPhone OS 3.0 upgrade is a fairly significant milestone for the Apple iPhone as it should plug many of the weaknesses in the software and delivers more opportunities to developers to develop innovative applications.

One of the main beneficiaries of the iPhone OS 3.0 upgrade will be the enterprise market as software developers will be able to extend corporate programs to the Apple iPhone. The director of product management at Sybase, Senthil Krishnapillai, has said that the iPhone is the first dual-purpose device to be used safely in an enterprise.

GlobeJot iPhone app acts as travel organizer

Just in time for those traveling to San Francisco for next week's Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC): Danilo Campos on Wednesday announced the release of GlobeJot, a new iPhone and iPod touch application that acts as a travel organizer. It costs $8 and is available for download from the App Store. Campos likens GlobeJot to "those gorgeous little leather travel journals of a forgotten age." The software tracks flight data, reservations, activities and checklists. It can store addresses and coordinates for instant one-tap viewing in the Maps application, and provides similar functionality for calling airlines and hotels to check on reservations.

GlobeJot's main "Dashboard" interface can be customized with the data you want. GlobeJot supports TripIt, the Web-based travel itinerary and trip planning service—you can import flights, reservations and activities from TripIt into GlobeJot.

GlobeJot lets you plan multiple trips, and helps you develop lists of all the things you want or need to do while you're traveling. These lists can be sorted by name, priority or cost.

This was an intense week in technology with two trade-shows going on at the same time. E3 2009 was quite impressive and Microsoft's Natal still has us dazzled. There have been just too many announcements at E3 to mention here. Please visit our E3 Section for a run down. There is not much time to take a break as on Monday the Apple WWDC 2009 starts and we expect one or even more new iPhones.

Verizon Wireless and Research in Motion today announced that the BlackBerry Pearl Flip 8230 will be available on Verizon’s network starting Friday, June 19th. We figured that it wouldn’t be to long before some type of official announcement about the Pearl Flip would be made seeing how pictures of the device taken in Verizon stores started appearing on the web yesterday.

The BlackBerry Pearl Flip 8230 is the CDMA version of RIM’s first BlackBerry Flip Phone that first appeared on T-Mobile last year. Verizon will charge $129.99 with a 2-year activation plan after a $70 mail-in rebate.

Kompass: Universal BaseCamp Portal For The BlackBerry, iPhone, Android, And WinMo

We just heard that Bryte Software is working on a Basecamp client for the BlackBerry, iPhone, Android, and Windows Mobile called Kompass for Basecamp and that they are accepting Beta testers.

If you don’t know what Basecamp is, go here, or, if you want to try to become a beta tester of Kompass for Basecamp, go hear.

I am going to go out on a limb and guess that this Kompass will become a pretty popular BlackBerry application once it is released.

ÜberTwitter Beta 3 Being Readied For Release

ÜberTwitter Beta 3 is being readied for release with a slew of new features and deepened support of Twitter. One major change is that ÜberTwitter will randomly add advertising to the time line in order to remain free, however, a premium version that disables the advertising will become available once the final version of ÜberTwitter is released.

Real or Fake: Is this image the new iPhone 2009?

A couple of new images reportedly to be from Apple's development web server showing pages of the new iPhone 2009 that most expect to be unveiled at next week's WWDC 2009 have been posted by Italian website spaziocellulare.

They note a front facing camera which is presumed to be of the much rumoured Mobile iChat and Voice Memos application from iPhone 3.0.

Obviously there is no real way of confirming these images are real or fake so for the moment we'll simply just treat them as possible shots of the new iPhone 2009.

There have been whispers of a Microsoft Retail Store, and it would appear that techradar has come up with some proof that it is coming, as they post several spy shots of this new Microsoft Retail Store.

As one can tell, the Microsoft Retail Store has an open and friendly appearance much like that of Apple stores. This representation is a 1/18 scale model of what the Microsoft Retail Store will look like.

There is also an image which indicates that this new Microsoft store will be called 'Windows Mobilization Flagship Environment.'

Palm Pre: More In The Wild Shots

It's not long until that June 6th Palm Pre launch but there have been a few "in the wild" images of Sprint employees using the Pre, and there have been a couple more of these images captured says everythingpre.

Apparently, two of their forum members managed to persuade a Best Buy employee into allowing them some personal hands-on time with a Palm Pre.

They say unfortunately the Pre wasn't activated so basically their time was with just the hardware and no glimpse of that Palm Pre webOS to speak of.

Canada’s Rogers Wireless offers new 15GB data plan

According to an article on iphoneincanada, as of the 16th of June 2009 all existing and new Rogers Wireless customers will be eligible for a new Rogers data plan.

The new Rogers data plan includes 15GB of data and will cost $150 a month and is geared towards heavy data users and the Rogers Mobile Internet Stick.

This new plan is available on monthly or 1 year, 2year or 3 year contract terms and supports mobile handsets such as all BlackBerry's, all iPhones, smartphones, Mobile Internet Sticks and HTC handsets.

Palm Pre Pros and Cons: Media Reviews, Premarket Shares

Seems like the Palm Pre is getting the big thumbs up according to Reuters, oh yes Mr Walt Mossberg from WSJ’s raves about it, Shares are up 2 percent in premarket and predictions say it will be a tough competitor to Apple Inc’s iPhone.

The Palm Pre smartphone is getting nearer its release, yes only 1 day, 10 hours and 57 minutes to go, and it seems it is getting really good and positive reviews. It has been given the big thumbs up by several newspapers for its shape, how the touchscreen controls works with the physical keyboard and the ability to run many applications at once.

Ok there are a few problems such as the concerns for battery life, and the lack of applications, but hey that is not bad. Wall Street Journal (WSJ) Walt Mossberg said that the Pre will come up against tough competition such as the new iPhone, he said "”I consider the Pre to be potentially the strongest rival to iPhone to date, provided it attracts lots of third-party apps, which it sorely lacks at launch,”

David Pogue, New York Times reviewer said that the Palm Pre had all the features for an advanced smartphone, he said “The hard part is making it all feel simple and unified — over all, Palm nailed it,” Pogue also said that opening certain programs can be very slow, “sometimes eight or nine seconds” and bemoaned the fact that there was no progress bar or hourglass to let you know it's still working.”

About the Premarket shares: Shares are up by 3 percent in premarket which is now trading to $12.90, The Palm Pre was first unveiled January 8th and shares have quadrupled since then.

BlackBerry Pearl Flip on Verizon showing in stores

According to Crackberry this image was posted by a member of Crackberry forums and is said to be a dummy version of the Verizon branded BlackBerry Pearl Flip sitting in a Verizon Wireless store.

Apparently according to the member's source marketing materials and actual BlackBerry Pearl Flip handset are now beginning to find their way into retail location.

If true then this signifies that the availability of the Verizon branded BlackBerry Pearl Flip smartphone is not too long away, and I can't see why it shouldn't be a real image as it is about time Verizon had these in their stores.

Could this be the Sony Ericsson X2 smartphone?

According to engadget mobile, the mobile phone pictured is the new Sony Ericsson "Vulcan" smartphone, which you may well recognise more as the new Sony Ericsson X2.

One would presume of course the Sony Ericsson X2 will replace the Sony Ericsson Xpreia X1 at some point in the not too distant future.

The X Panel button can be made out in the image on the lower left front while a Windows key sits neatly in the upper left of the keyboard this adds to the credibility of this being the Sony Ericsson X2 as the X1 is the only device which supports it.

Garmin Asus Android Phone coming Q1 of next year?

According to pcworld Garmin-Asus has confirmed they plan on releasing their first Android platform smartphone “no later than the first quarter of next year.”

Furthermore apparently an Asus executive also stated that this new Android smartphone may well show a bit earlier, but didn't speculate any further on the handset or what price it may command.

Having said that, you just have to look at the Garmin Asus record for pushing out mobile phones on schedule such as the G60 nuviphone for example, did that ever arrive by the way, or are we still waiting on that one?

The Nokia 5630 XpressMusic is essentially an E52 clone with swapped out keyboard for a funkier design emphasizing the 5630 XpressMusic's music capabilities that we have come to expect in an XpressMusic handset.

Feature wise the Nokia 5630 XpressMusic offers Symbian S60 3rd FP2, 3.2 megapixel camera with auto-focus, 3.5G, WiFi, advanced profile support and integrated Nokia Messaging. The Nokia 5630 XpressMusic carries a price tag of roughly €225, which is around the $360 mark.

If anyone's going to get their hands on a new iPhone before WWDC 2009 it is probably going to be Walt Mossberg, not that we are confirming he has one of course.

Mossberg has spoken on ptech about his views on the new iPhone and of course the Palm Pre of which he says…”Whether the Pre is better than the iPhone depends on your personal preferences, though I’d note that the new iPhone to be unveiled next week will have lots of added features that could alter those calculations.”

Computex 2009: Best Choice award goes to Mio Explora K75

Out of all the 400 products from 170 makers at Computex 2009 at Taipei, the Best Choice Award in the Mobile category goes to the Mio Explora K75 reports gsmarena.

The Mio Explora K75 runs Windows Mobile 6.5 operating system and has a 528 MHz CPU; there is a 3.5 inch display, 3 megapixel camera, GPS navigation, Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP, WiFi and microSD slot.

The Mio Explora K75 mobile phone is quad-band GSM and tri-band HSPA, is 11.9mm thick with a weight of 115 grams and has a 4 hour Li-ion battery. The K75 GPS is in front of its rivals and was commended for best-in-class sensitivity and Mio's new Sprint Mobile navigation software.

We are going to give you the WWDC 2009 Insight Expectations, yes how about the New Apple iPhone nano and of course the Macbooks.

Only a few more days and the big doors open at WWDC 2009 and what an event to excite, rumours this rumours that and plenty of expectations flying around at the moment, so what can we expect to hear at this special event? Well we know for a fact that there will be the announcement of iPhone 3.0 but there are a few more predictions such as the Macbooks and iPhone nano.

1 GHz Acer F1 Smartphone, L1 and C1 coming after

Acer has shown three mobile phones at Computex 2009 which are the Acer F1, Acer L1 and Acer C1 smartphones reports gsmarena.

The Acer F1 smartphone will run Windows Mobile 6.5 operating system and feature a 1GHz processor, 3.8 inch WVGA display, 3G with HSDPA, GPS, FM radio, 5 megapixel camera and 3.5mm audio jack. The Acer F1 is expected to launch in September.

The Acer L1 is a mid range handset which will probably sport a slide out numeric keyboard, five-way navigation key to enable touch-less operation, an Acer designed user interface plug-in, and a 2.8 inch touch screen, again expected in September.

Finally the Acer C1 will pack Windows Mobile 6.5 along with a 2.8 inch touch screen, 2 megapixel camera, and 528 MHz CPU. The Acer C1 is also expected to follow in September. However, Acer has not revealed any other details or prices.

I just heard some wonderful news. Matt Mullenweg, the founding developer of WordPress and the guy who started Automattic, the company behind WordPress.com and Askimet, has announced that a WordPress application for the BlackBerry will be released soon.

I personally cannot wait for this to come out. I overwhelming use WordPress and WordPressMu for most of the various blogs and websites that I run, RIMarkable included. A WordPress BlackBerry App will be great for those times when I am out an about without my laptop but want to post something up quickly.

We don’t have any idea what features will be included or an idea (other than soon) when a WordPress BlackBerry App will be released, however, if it is anything like the iPhone Wordpress App, it will quickly become one of the most used applications on my BlackBerry.

AT&T Cuts Prices Of BlackBerry Bold And Curve 8900

We heard a rumor a week and a half ago that AT&T was going to cut the price of the BlackBerry Bold. It would appear, however, that AT&T not only cut the price of the Bold down to $199 after a $100 mail-in rebate. The price of the BlackBerry Curve 8900 has also been reduced, now only $149.99 after a $100 mail-in rebate.

Could Palm and Sprint be limiting Palm Pre availability at launch to avoid the massive lines of prospective customers that was seen when Apple launched the Apple iPhone?

Intomobile speculates that this is the case, as InsideSprintNow put some light on the Palm Pre activation procedure along with Sprint's activation procedure.

Apparently the Palm Pre will be activated by Sprint agents thus enabling the Palm Pre owner to finalise activation via the Pre's "Hands-free Activation" feature. One thing with limiting the Palm Pre is that Sprint agents won't get too overworked.

New Android phone coming this summer says T-Mobile USA

Cole Brodman, T-Mobile USA's CTO has confirmed that T-Mobile USA is gearing up to roll out their 2nd Google Android mobile handset. Brodman told moconews that the follow up mobile phone to the T-Mobile G1 will be out early in summer and details of the release will follow this month.

T-Mobile is the 4th largest US carrier and has sold at least 1 million Android powered handsets, and although there isn't much known on specifics about the new Android phone it will follow the launch of the Palm Pre but may just land in stores before the expected new iPhone 2009.

The new Android phone will sport the Cupcake OS; however, Brodman wouldn't speculate further other than state T-Mobile USA has multiple new Android devices coming from new handset manufacturers.

INQ Mobile has plans to introduce a Twitter phone by Christmas and hopes to cash in on the popular interest in Twittering, the head of INQ has told Reuters.

According to INQ chief exec, Frank Meehan, the INQ Twitter phone would be the first mass market phone with an internet based Twitter client and cost operators less than $140.

Meehan also confirmed that the phone will operate via internet connection for sending tweets like Twitter's own service. INQ Mobile also has plans to launch another mobile phone for the Christmas market.

For a little over a year I’ve thought that a Pre-Paid BlackBerry would fly in the U.S. It would appear that T-Mobile now agrees with me.

We are hearing reports of a $299 T-Mobile BlackBerry Pearl II that doesn’t require a contract on sale at various Best Buy and Target stores around the country. I wonder how long it will be before any of the other big wireless carriers will offer similar deals? I’d be willing to bet that we will see more devices offered at a lower price point when we do.

Apple has now rolled out its newest version of iTunes, iTunes 8.2., and this new update brings with it support for iPhone OS 3.0 for Apple iPhone handsets reports an article on techtree.

There are a few warnings about downloading the all new Apple iTunes 8.2, we reported a few moments ago about "apple-itunes-82-affects-quickpwn-and-pwnagetool", well the latest news according to The iPhone blog is to do with Palm Pre Sync Issues, Low-Level USB Protocol and that iTunes prevents iPhone Jailbreak.

The iPhone Dev-Team said that there are issues with iTunes 8.2 in where they told jailbreakers and potential jailbreakers not to install the all new released iTunes update. Problems occurring include the ability to use QuickPwn, iPhone Tunneling Suite (ssh over usb) and PwnageTool, this is not deliberate but just a flaw and that Apple has updated a low-level USB protocol.

No doubt the Dev-Team is working on a fix but cannot see it releasing until the iPhone OS 3.0 is final, another interesting thing is that could it affect the Palm Pre sync? Well the Dev-Team thinks that it may possibly break Palm Pre's connection to the device (Please let us know about this one).

According to a report on trusted reviews, it looks like Sony Ericsson is finally ditching the Memory Stick line and opting for the standard microSD card range, which could well signify Sony Ericsson is moving away from the proprietary roots that Sony continually champions.

According to an article on product-reviews, the Apple iPhone and iPod Touch have changed the portable gaming industry, before people would pay high prices for the likes of Sony PSP games or Nintendo DS; there is now a cheaper option available.

The Sony PSP obviously has better controls, but uses game discs whereas with the iPhone games can be downloaded from the Apple App Store as digital content, which can be done by the PS3 but more options was needed for storage.

Sony's answer is the PSP Go that is rumoured to sport some 16GB of storage, no UMD disk format and digital content downloads, so if the PSP Go and Sony can produce great digital download solution it could well be the better portable option.

New Apple iPhone 2009 Specs, Features, Release and Price Recap

Obviously we will be bringing you the full specs and features of the all new Apple iPhone 2009 in our specifications section, but for now we will give a quick recap of what we know.

So far we know that this phone will feature either 16GB and 32GB versions which means it will no longer be 8GB models, 3.2-megapixel camera which is better than the current 2 megapixel, Video-recording/editing capabilities, the long-awaited ability to send a picture & video via MMS, metal band surrounding the edge will disappear, OLED screen, the new iPhone will also have 1.5 times the battery life of the current models, Built-in FM transmitter, Double the RAM and processing power, Built-in compass, Rubber-tread backing and Sleeker design.

Got to love the fact that the Apple logo on back will glow and the fact it will have camera/GPS/compass date of July 17th but we are expecting it to be a before, roll on WWDC. The latest news to do with the new Apple iPhone 4G is all about spare parts, images have recently surfaced of spare parts for the new iPhone.

Looking at the image you can clearly see that the black bezel which has an ear speaker, which is little higher than the current iPhone 3G, is this all real or simple fake? Or are these spare parts for a fake/cope iPhone 4G? So many questions

The Sprint Palm Pre smartphone will soon be in the public's hands where they can put it through their paces and give it a real good going over to find out just how good or bad the Palm Pre is.

So far there haven't been many hands-on reviews available of the Palm Pre for obvious reasons, one being holding off on any release for such a long time.

So what we at Phones Review would like to do is offer our readers who manage to get hold of a Palm Pre, to review it and send their personal Palm Pre Review to us and we will post it on Phones Review.

As we all know when iPhone 3.0 hits this summer it will enable iPhone users to use Bluetooth and stereo headsets with both A2DP and ARCP protocols.

theiphoneblog took a look at the Motorola S9 Stereo Bluetooth Headset for iPhone 3.0 previously and now looks at the Motorola MOTOROKR S9 HD and has found it offers great sound.

Other factors they found where it has good battery life, is well suited for on the go usage, is light and comfortable, while on the down side it may not fit all head sizes and isn't suited for lying down.

LG GT505 and GW520 Social Networking phones released

News from itproporta has it that LG has released the LG GT505 and LG GW520 mobile handsets which focus heavily on social networking.

The LG GT505 incorporates a 3 inch touch screen, 5 megapixel camera, WiFi, and comes with a 30-day LG Wisepilot turn-by-turn navigation application trial, and 3.6mbps but no other specifications or details are available as yet.

The LG GW520 sports a slide out QWERTY keyboard, 2.8 inch touch screen, 3 megapixel camera, and 7.2mbps HSDPA. Both smartphone will receive social networking update direct OTA and some social networking website will come as default and will feature push email.

The LG GT505 is destined for Orange UK next month and the LG GW520 will be with most networks.

Just a quick recap and comparison of the two phones, the Samsung Pixon 12 has a 12 megapixel camera and 3.1 inch full AMOLED touch screen, it also features Auto-Focus Tracking which basically means you can select a focus point with a simple touch of a finger. Samsung F480 now has new Games Edition

The Samsung F480 smartphone has sold over five million handsets worldwide and Samsung continue to push out new versions of the Samsung F480 such as the La Fleur version, Hugo Boss version and a pink version.

Now unwiredview reports that Samsung has unveiled the new Samsung F480 Games Edition which comes pre-installed with a number of mobile games of course like "Millenium Poker," "Who wants to be a millionaire 2009," and "Pacman."

Spec wise the Samsung F480 remains the same as any other Samsung F480, while the Samsung F480 Games Edition will be available mid June in Europe for €399.

Nokia N97 Support Page now online

According to a post on mivadika, Nokia has now launched the official Support Page for the Nokia N97 smartphone a week after launching the official Nokia N97 website.

The Nokia N97 Support Page offers potential customers access to various Nokia OC software like Nokia Software Updater, and Nokia PC Suite which is compatible with the Nokia N97.

There is also a final version of the Nokia N97 User manual which is available as a PDF file for download, along with forum discussion and compatible accessories, and this Support Page launch signifies the Nokia N97 one step closer to being released.

It would appear that someone, somewhere in the world has managed to get hold of the first available Nokia N97 and has been gracious enough to post an unboxing video, which we of course have for your viewing pleasure.

Bare in mind, Nokia has yet to officially ship any Nokia N97 handsets, so it is quite possible that this video is a video of a KIRF unboxing.

As for the commentary on the N97 unboxing well it is somewhat difficult to actually understand what is being said which could also mean this is actually a fake unboxing, but you never know.

Did you all miss this one? Safari Browser is to include Geo-location on the iPhone, if you check GPS-enabled webpage page on a 3.0B5 iPhone’s Mobile Safari and Boom the webpage will check the GPS coordinates of the iPhone and in return show results according to ComputerWorld.

Mozilla’s upcoming implementation of the Geolocation API test page was built by Doug Turner; if you have Firefox 3.5B you can test it out for yourself. Google said that they will not bring in their Latitude for iPhone and said that they were now going to have a WebApp that would run in Safari.

Nokia has now launched Nokia Messaging for Symbian S60 5th edition, which as we all know the only Nokia S60 5th edition handset available at the moment is the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic says unwiredview.

Nokia Messaging is an email aggregator which will connect ten different web mail accounts and deliver all the mail in a single place on your mobile phone.

Nokai Messaging supports thousands of email providersand includes Windows Live Hotmail. Support for HTML and the application can be configured via the web or your mobile phone, and has a few bug fixes. The Nokia messaging can be downloaded via the official Nokia website.

RIM BlackBerry PDF Warning: Server versions 4.1.3 to 5.0 are affected

RIM warns of PDF vulnerability, apparently Server versions 4.1.3 to 5.0 are affected, RIM (Research In Motion) has warned that there are critical bugs in the BlackBerry Professional Software and BlackBerry Enterprise Server.

This bug could be used to execute malicious code and shut down a server; these bugs are the latest to affect the PDF distiller component of the BlackBerry Attachment Service which is not good news at all. RIM haven't given details of the flaws but have said that they could be exploited via a specially crafted PDF file.

There is an interim patch available from RIM’s website that will fix the problem, more information via BlackBerry.

Has RIM Stopped Updating RIM.com?

One of the places that I check regularly to see whats going on at RIM is the RIM.com website. It isn’t unusual for RIM.com to go for several days and sometimes even for more than a week or so without any updates , however, it has been well over a month since the site has been updated.

RIM.com clearly isn’t shut down, but, it doesn’t appear to be being updated either. Whats the deal RIM?

Video: iCar Remote for iPhone, Cool but Fake

We have a video for you today of what looks to be a car remote control application for the Apple iPhone and is called iCar Remote.

The guy in the video says it's available from the iTunes App Store and they send you a dashboard receiver which allows the iPhoner to remotely control their car windows, doors, start the vehicle and even drive the car.

However, although it looks to be a cool iPhone application, it is fake, doesn't exist as car controlling iPhone applications are not real, but a fun video anyway.

Samsung Armani Windows Mobile Smartphone Coming June 11th

The word is to expect a clash of Samsung, Microsoft and Giorgio Armani on June the 11th as a report has it on samsunghub has it that this is when the new Samsung Armani will be unveiled to the mobile world.

We first heard of the Windows Mobile Samsung Armani smartphone back in February, and word has it Samsung will refresh their Armani line-up this fall.

And it looks like Italy will be the first to see the Samsung Armani as it will be unveiled in Milan on June the 11th and will probably run Windows Mobile 6.5.

Rogers Canada to gain Nokia 5800 XpressMusic soon

Looks like our Canadian buddies will son be getting their hands on the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic as MobileSyrup reports the upcoming device is headed for Rogers Wireless.

An image of a Rogers promotional poster of the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic has been spotted at The Source in Ottawa as "coming soon."

This means it should be quite a good summer for Canadians with the HTC Magic, HTC Dream, Sony Ericsson Xperia X1, a couple of BlackBerry handsets and now the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic all expected quite soon. Although there is currently no word on any pricing or actually release dates.

Yesterday we heard that Sony Ericsson announced three new mobile phones, the Sony Ericsson Aino, Satio, and Yari handsets, and today we follow that announcement with a video hands-on of each handset.

Below you will find the three videos; the first is the Sony Ericsson Satio which was the Idou and lasts nearly three minutes. Next is the Sony Ericsson Anio at just over three minutes, and lastly is the Sony Ericsson Yari at almost two and a half minutes.

Palm Pre Exclusive to Sprint for 2009 Says Exec

After Verizon Wireless CEO Lowell McAdam announces that Verizon will gain the Palm Pre smartphone in "the next six months or so," Sprint come back to confirm that they will have the Palm Pre through 2009 reports smartmoney.

James Fisher, a spokesman for Sprint has said “We have the Pre through 2009.”

So, if McAdam does mean Verizon will get the Palm Pre in six months from when it launches on Sprint on June the 6th, this would mean Verizon would get the Pre in December, which is still in 2009, no? So either Verizon isn't getting the Pre in 6 months or Sprint doesn't have exclusivity for all of 2009, right?

Palm Pre gains First Hands-on Review

The guys over at the BGR have managed to get hold of a Palm Pre smartphone and given it the hands-on treatment, and they say there is so much to cover that this is only their first impressions.

They say the Palm Pre feels good in the hand where size and shape are concerned but it does hold a "plastiky aura" about it and that things aren't looking too good with the QWERTY keyboard either due to multiple key hitting.

As for the Palm Pre screen, it is really responsive, executes well and the captive touch is awesome. The guy's rate the Palm Pre in front of the T-Mobile G1 but just behind the iPhone as far as screens go.

18 to 20 Android phones release this year says Google

The senior director for Mobile Platforms for Google, Andy Rudin has confirmed that there will be at least 18 or possibly 20 Android based phones released this year claims an article over on engadget mobile.

Rubin also states that these Android handset will come from eight or nine manufacturers with faster adoption seen in Europe and will be three flavours of Android.

Said Android flavours are… a free to download version of Android without Google applications such as Goggle Calendar and Gmail…next is the same as previous but where manufacturers sign a distribution contract with Google and pre-install Google apps…and finally the full fledged Google logo and Google apps installed and unrestricted access.

Samsung Spark T749 Passes FCC on way to T-Mobile USA

A new Samsung mobile phone has just passed the FCC and is the Samsung Spark T749 which is apparently destined for T-Mobile USA according to a report on cellphone signal.

The Samsung Spark T749 is a mid-range handset much like the Samsung T349 and T239, and the Spark T749 will be quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE 800/1900 Mhz and dual-band HSDPA 1700/2100 MHz.

There is no word on whether the Samsung Spark T749 will sport a touch screen but should also include aGPS with TeleNav, and a 3 megapixel camera. As expected there is also no word on any release date or expected price details.

Sony Ericsson Idou renamed Satio for October

The Symbian powered Sony Ericsson Idou smartphone which was unveiled back at Mobile World Congress is now to come to the market under a new name, and thus will now be known as the Sony Ericsson "Satio," confirms semcblog.

Spec wise, everything remains the same with the Sony Ericsson Satio so will have the 12.1 megapixel camera with xenon flash, dual-band HSPA, GSM/GPRS/EDGE 850/900/1800/1900 MHz and UMTS/HSPA 900/2100 MHz, 3.5 inch touch screen, and microSD expansion.

The Sony Ericsson Satio will be available in Bordeaux, Black and Silver and is expected sometime in October.

HTC Magic Turns Android OPhone for China Mobile

The word is HTC plan to begin offering an Android based smartphone as of next month in China and will be a version of the HTC Magic claims Cnet.

The HTC Magic is apparently to be customised with software from China Mobile and will join China Mobile's OPhone range.

When China Mobile launches the customised HTC Magic in June although the pricing hasn't been confirmed it is speculated the mobile phone will cost somewhere in the region of 5000 yuan which is roughly $732, which is somewhat expensive for a handset worth around $450.

Palm Pre Can Sync with iTunes and iPhone

The latest word with the Palm Pre is the smartphone can actually sync seamlessly with the users desktop computer via iTunes and iPhoto confirms apple20.

Apparently when the Palm Pre is plugged into your computer via USB up pops 3 options, mass storage mode, charging mode and "Media Sync" mode. The first two are fairly self explanatory with charging mode charging the Palm Pre and mass storage turning the Palm Pre into a flash drive for portable storage.

It's the "Media Sync" mode which turns the Palm Pre into an official Apple recognisable device that can sync photos and tunes from iTunes and iPhoto.

Sony Ericsson has announced 3 new mobile handsets as part of their Entertainment Unlimited series, the Sony Ericsson Yari, Aino and Satio, reports Intomobile.

The Sony Ericsson Aino is a slider with a 3 inch touch screen, 8.1 megapixel camera with auto-focus and flash, numeric keypad, WiFi, HSPA 3G, AGPS, Bluetooth, accelerometer, and memory slot. Inside the box is an 8GB memory card, matching wireless headphone MH100 and charging stand EC10.

The Sony Ericsson Satio is none other than the Sony Ericsson Idou with a 12.1 megapixel camera, 3.5 inch nHD touch screen, 60 5th edition Symbian operating system, WiFi, TV out, HSPA 3G, AGPS, Bluetooth, accelerometer, and again with 8GB memory card in the box.

The Sony Ericsson Yari is a slider with 2.4 inch QVGA display, 5 megapixel camera with auto-focus and flash, is a gaming handset so has dedicated gaming keys and pre-installed motion sensitive games, stereo speakers, YouTube application, and 1GB memory card along with MH300 head set and EC500 phone stand in the box.

No pricing is available but they are expected in Q4.

Verizon gains Palm Pre and Storm 2 later in 2009?

Well what do you know; it appears that Sprint won't be hanging onto that Palm Pre exclusivity for too long. As we know the Palm Pre hits Sprint's network on June the 6th, but the Pre is seen to be the saviour of Palm, and the best way to make that possible is to go with multiple carriers for more sales.

Therefore, according to a report on Reuters, Verizon Wireless has announced that the Palm Pre will be coming to their network sometime in 2009.

The news comes via Lowell McAdam, Verizon's chief exec and he confirmed that Verizon will gain the Palm Pre sometime in "the next six months or so." McAdam went on to confirm that Verizon will also gain the BlackBerry Storm 2 with a revamped touch screen at some point this year.

BlackBerry Storm 2 Not Coming Until Late Fall At The Earliest

There had been rumors floating around that the BlackBerry Storm 2 could come out as early as this month and that it would definitely be out by the end of June, however those dreams have been dashed as Lowell McAdams, the top executive for the venture of Verizon Communications Inc and Vodafone Group Plc, officially stated in a webcast earlier today that the BlackBerry Storm 2 would come out on Verizon in about 6 months.

This pushes a release of the the next touch screen only BlackBerry to a late Fall if not early Winter release at the earliest. I just hope that Verizon certifies an OS update for the original BlackBerry Storm before then…

Should Google And RIM Collaborate On A Next-Gen Android Powered BlackBerry?

I just read an interesting post over on ZDNet how a Google Android powered BlackBerry would be the ‘Perfect Storm‘, pun intended. I’ve actually thought for a while that RIM should create a device that runs Android.

A "Perfect Storm": The Linux-based Android OS, and tight integration with Google's web services, running on BlackBerry hardware and connected to RIM's corporate messaging/calendar syncing infrastructure would be an unstoppable mobile enterprise device platform that not even Apple's iPhone, Windows Mobile or Palm webOS could dare to challenge. But could the marriage ever be consummated?

Even before I thought that Google and RIM should get together on a device that runs Android I thought that RIM should have bought Palm when they were on the cheap and developed their WebOS as the next BlackBerry OS. I don’t think, for most BlackBerry users, the BlackBerry OS is what draws them to the device.

RIM, with an exception or two, puts out quality hardware that just works and works well for what you use it for. Advances in the OS have been long in the tooth, however, and I wonder if it is time to take some of the great features of the BlackBerry OS and run them securely on an next-gen mobile OS like Android.

Vodafone Qatar to go live in June

The word is Vodafone wants to launch their operation in Qatar sometime in June reports itp.net.

Vodafone customers will be able to sign up on the Vodafone website as of next month right after the launch and roll out should take place in September if all goes according to plan.

Currently Vodafone has trials with a limited number of customers going on to establish the effectiveness of their network, and Vodafone is also eyeing other opportunities in the Middle East. The joint venture between Vodafone Group PLC and Qatar Foundation raised $1 billion in its initial public offering to Qatari nationals.

Nokia 5900 XpressMusic is actually Low-end 5530 Kenzo

A couple of weeks ago an alleged Nokia 5900 XpressMusic was leaked with a vie to Nokia wanting to upgrade the looks of their plain mid-range 5800 so it held a more premium feel.

Well according to cellpassion, they say they can “confidently say” that the 5900 XpressMusic is in fact a downgrade from the 5800 XpressMusic. In fact it is a model 5530 called "Kenzo".

The rumoured specs for the "Kenzo" are 2.9 inch QVGA display, 3.2 megapixel camera with auto-focus; the real biggie is a lack of WiFi and 3G, but there is 150MB of onboard storage, and that it would retail at $200.

No Telephony Functionality for Nintendo

Credible rivals to the Nintendo DSi is often been the Apple iPhone and iPod Touch, but moconews reports that Nintendo has ruled out adding mobile phone functionality to their gaming devices.

Apparently back in April, Satoru Iwata, president of Nintendo stated that Nintendo would offer a phone if it could avoid monthly subscriptions. However the chief operating officer of Nintendo of America, Reggie Fils-Aime told Nytimes.com…"Telephony is not in our wheelhouse. It's not something I anticipate us getting into."

However, apparently Nintendo is considering offering always-on connectivity which is something similar to that of the Kindle e-reader.

Google Ion receives unboxing and hands-on treatment

The guys over at engadget mobile have managed to get hold of a Google Ion mobile handset and have given it the hands-on and unboxing treatment including several clear images.

They say the Google Ion is virtually the spitting image of the HTC Magic including 30 days T-Mobile service on a SIM card.

The Google Ion also sports Android Cupcake although they did find the portrait keyboard a little cramped but found the landscape keyboard quite comfortable to use. The other thing they noticed was the Google Ion is a real fingerprint magnet.

It looks like Palm wishes to share images taken by their Palm Pre smartphone as engadget mobile reports Palm's official Twitter account has tweeted about testing out the image and video sharing website, yfrog.

The image posted was apparently taken with a Palm Pre smartphone and is presumed to be the 1st snap posted taken by the Palm Pre 3 megapixel camera.

Surprisingly the image does have great clarity considering it was taken with only a 3 megapixel camera, still it is nice to see what the Palm Pre camera can produce.

T-Mobile HTC Dash 3G gets Pictured

The T-Mobile Dash replacement had gone and got itself pictured by the guys over at tmonews. The HTC Maple/Dash 3G has popped up sporting the T-Mobile branding lending confirmation as to its carrier.

Originally it was believed that the HTC Dash 3G wouldn't be coming to T-Mobile but this image proves otherwise. Then it was rumoured the Dash 3G would be with T-Mobile with a tentative release date of the 1st of July.

The other area that is still somewhat vague with the T-Mobile branded HTC Dash 3G is just what Windows Mobile software it uses, still no doubt that will be found out soon enough.

General Mobile DSTL1 Dual SIM Price and Release Date

According to a post over on mobileburn, General Mobile has announced the availability of their DSTL1 Android based dual SIM smartphone in the United States and Turkey by the end of June.

Spec wise the General Mobile DSTL1 spots Android 1.5 Cupcake OS, dual EDGE only SIMs, WiFi, 3 inch WQVGA LCD resistive touch screen, 5 megapixel camera with auto-focus, and microSD expansion up to 16GB.

The General Mobile DSTL1 will command a price tag of somewhere between $550 and $750 and will ship with a 4GB microSD card in the box.

Could the Nokia N97 be a challenge to the Palm Pre?

That is a question raised by Cnet although they say Palm is fortunate Nokia does not yet have any US carrier partners for the Nokia N97.

The new Nokia could well challenge the Palm Pre if they were on the same level price wise, but due to the Nokia N97 being unsubsidised by a carrier it will cost $699 whereas the Palm Pre will cost $199.

If it wasn't for that price subsidy the Nokia N97 could put a dampener on early sales of the Palm Pre which is due release on June the 6th, but unfortunately that big price differential makes the N97 challenging the Pre a bit of a non-starter.

Palm Pre has Push Gmail?

According to My Pre, a tipster with a webOS emulator has discovered that the Palm Pre smartphone will have IMAP IDLE which will enable Gmail users to gain instant reception of new email, in other words push email.

Currently only the Android packing T-Mobile G1 supports Google's push Gmail, and soon it will be available on other Android based smartphones such as the HTC Magic.

Thus it appears Palm's close relationship with Google is working out nicely for potential Palm Pre users who will now get a taste of Push Gmail synced through Synergy.

iPhone 2009 Speculation Roundup as WWDC Nears

Apple's WWDC event is nearly upon us, and it is widely expected Apple will unveil the new iPhone 2009, although nothing has been confirmed, speculation is wide on what can be expected.

According to a roundup of rumours on smartphones.about.com, the most detailed reports on the new iPhone came via a Chinese website which posted new iPhone features such as a 3.2MP camera, 32GB storage, FM receiver, 256MB of RAM and a 600 MHz processor.

Further rumour has it that a new iPhone will sport an OLED screen, video chat and there was even a posted release date of July the 17th after an official announcement during WWDC. The big question is though is whether any or all of these rumours will materialise as true at WWDC.

BT Boss Barrault Fails and gets £2.8 million

Despite massive write-downs at BT last year, Frenchman Francois Barrault, who led BT's global services business, was paid £2.85 million. Barrault quit BT at the end of October as it became clear some of his division's contracts were much less profitable than the company had anticipated.

Failure to deliver on cost savings which BT had promised the City resulted in 2 profit warnings which contributed in a large part to BT's loss of £134 million in the year to the 31st of March according to a report on thescotsman.

An annual report from BT has revealed that on top of Barrault's £1.25 million salary he was given a severance payment of £1.6 million, and
BT has stated that the payment was in “strict accordance with his contract” and no bonus was given.

I was just taking a look at Opera’s State of the Mobile Web, a monthly analysis of the key trends affecting the mobile Web worldwide, and I was a little surprised when I learned that the BlackBerry 8330 was the number one web browsing handset (running Opera Mini) for the month of April. I was downright shocked to find that BlackBerry devices hold 7 of the top 10 spots on the list of mobile devices running Opera Mini.

I guess that BlackBerry users browse the web a little more than I thought.

AT&T cheaper iPhone plans and netbook expansion

AT&T head of mobility and consumer business, Ralph de la Vega has told Reuters that he sees a gradual economic recovery. De la Vega also said that it will be costly for AT&T to cut prices of unlimited web surfing service.

Rather AT&T could offer limited web surfing on mobile phones at a lower fee. De la Vega has stated that they continue to study what is the best thing that is available; not just from the iPhone point of view, but what AT&T can do to stimulate demand.

The AT&T exec also announced that AT&T is to expand sales of their netbook business from Dell Inc, Lenovo Group Ltd and Acer Inc to all AT&T stores through this summer.

Will the New iPhone 2009 have iVideo?

With an expected new iPhone coming from Apple this summer, there has been considerable speculation as to what this new iPhone 2009 will have as features and computer world has done a roundup of some of those rumours.

For example there have been rumours of video chat capability supported by MMS, rumours of a 32GB iPhone. Video chat was a big concern for some developers and analysts at last years WWDC.

The new iPhone OS 3.0 is said to support MMS and 100 new features including cut & paste and Bluetooth. The MMS software reports indicate that the next iPhone could well support iPhone video chat and for that to be so the new iPhone 2009 would need to sport a good camera and microphone along with a fast connection speed.

Apparently according to an article on emarketer, the Apple iPhone may just take mobile advertising up a notch as the word is iPhone users are more likely to recall mobile adverts than users of other mobile handsets.

Apparently figures show that iPhone users had higher rates of recall via all measured media types of mobile ads including SMS, mobile display, mobile TV, video adverts, audio, picture and video messages.

The iPhone was ranked as the 2nd highest selling smartphone in 09, and was ranked at number 1 in the second half of 08. So it appears the Apple iPhone is good for mobile advertising.

Palm Pre to be sold only to the Right Customers?

Apparently a Palm and Sprint Palm Pre Launch Guide has the statement in it…We Can't Afford to Sell the Pre to the Wrong Customers, reports ubergizmo.

Now if true just what does the "Wrong Customer" mean to Palm and Sprint? We already know places such as Best Buy will have limited stock of the Palm Pre.

Does this statement mean potential customers for the Palm Pre need to be vetted before being allowed to purchase? Are normal everyday people not worthy of the Palm Pre? If said statement is true just how are sales people going to work out who the right customers are?

Terminate the Rate Campaign by BT and 3UK

Well, apparently BT and 3UK have a campaign running to get the Mobile Termination Rate lowered to a more reasonable rate.

The campaign is called Terminate The Rate, which the MTR currently sits at around 4.7p or more for every minute of a call, which adds up to millions of pounds for consumers in the UK every year.

3UK and BT believe the MTR is excessive and distorts competition and thus want Ofcom to lower the rate to reflect actual costs. If you are of the same opinion and would like to support the campaign you can sign the online petition by following the link.

Sharp LR0GC02 Slimmest Solar Panel in World

Sharp has announced the availability of their slimmest mobile phone solar panel, and is now available to mobile phone manufacturers across the globe for use in future mobile hardware according to an article over on akihabaranews.

The Sharp LR0GC02 Solar Panel is just 0.8mm thick and is thus the world's thinnest solar panel. Sharp hopes to make the use of solar powered mobile handsets more convenient by producing this slimmer panel.

The Sharp LR0GC02 Solar Panel is only capable of outputting 300 mW of power though due to its extreme thinness which isn't enough to power a smartphone on its own so would be needed to be used in conjunction with a more traditional Li-ion battery.

Could Motorola be Skipping WinMo 6.5 to Save Cash?

Motorola has apparently switched operating systems for their latest handset switching from Windows Mobile to Android stating they believe Android is more competitive.

However, Motorola does say when Windows Mobile 7 becomes available in 2010 they will participate in a more focused way.

Betanews had a discussion with analysts on thi subject last week with Avi Greengart, Research Dircetor for Consumer Devices as Current Analysis, and he defended Windows Mobile 6.5 as a viable OS.

So is Motorola looking to save cash simply by skipping Windows Mobile 6.5 and opting for Google Android OS due to its relatively low-cost licensing model and semi-open-source structure?

Analyst Ups Price Target for Research In Motion

According to a report on the windsorstar, BMO Capital Markets has raised their price target for BlackBerry maker Research In Motion shares.

BMO Capital Markets say that strong mobile phone shipments along with lower operating expenses at Research In Motion is the reason.

BMO Capital Markets analyst, Keith Bachman, raised his price target on RIM stock from $72 up to $82, and said mid range along with high end products in various price points will keep shipment strong, along with keeping gross margins more balanced. So some good news for Research In Motion then.

Palm Pre Handsets Available Below 150K?

According to Ashok Kumar, an analyst for Collins Stewart, Palm and Foxconn International are experiencing problems producing high quantities of the Palm Pre smartphone reports barrons.

Sprint has already acknowledged there will be limited supplies of the Palm Pre when it goes live on June the 6th. Best Buy has also confirmed they will have limited stock.

However, Kumar, after checking back with his source at Foxconn now believes that the supply of the Palm Pre at introduction will be below even a reduced estimate of some 150,000 Palm Pre handsets. The reason given for this is Foxconn is more or less having to check each handset one by one by hand.

Palm Pre price target on the stock from $12 to $14

Mike Abramsky, an analyst for RBC Capital has raised his target price on Palm Pre stock from $12 to $14 confirms a report on Barrons. Abramsky says the Palm Pre offers the benefits of the iPhone and the BlackBerry.

Abramsky also believes that a positive reception of the Palm Pre will "trounce the sceptics." Abramsky's earnings expectations are higher than the Street, with a forcast for a loss of $1.91 per share for the fiscal year ending May vs. the consensus of a loss of $2.37 per share.

So basically if the Palm Pre sells to the tune of 10 million handsets from release through to the same time in 2010, Palm should have $1.4 million in sales on a non-GAAP basis in May. Which means non-GAAP profit would total a loss of 13 cents.

The Motorola QA4 Evoke is now to be offered by Cricket, however the Motorola QA4 Evoke is not yet available but there is a pre-order page posted online which states the Motorola QA4 Evoke will cost $279.99 with an expected shipping date of the 3rd of June.

Furthermore, mobileburn states that once the Motorola QA4 Evoke is purchased from cricket the user will require an appropriate data service which Cricket offer beginning at $15 per month.

AT&T gains Android Toting HTC Lancaster

With the possibility of Verizon Wireless gaining access to the iPhone, AT&T may just be gearing up to enter the Google Android arena with the launch of the Android platform packing HTC Lancaster.

According to pcworld, AT&T will launch the HTC Lancaster in August and will be AT&T's first venture into the world of Android.

The AT&T branded Lancaster sports the Android platform, a full sliding QWERTY keyboard, 2.8 inch QVGA touch screen, AGPS, EDGE 850/1900MHz, Bluetooth 2.0, USB 2.0, 3 megapixel camera with fixed focus and more unique skin and social messaging.

AT&T gains Nokia Thresher, Grouper, Snapper and Mako handsets

Nokia intends to deliver several new mobile phones to AT&T over the next few months according to engadet mobile and is the Nokia Mako, Nokia Thresher and Nokia Snapper, and Nokia Grouper.

The Nokia Mako is a slide-slider QWERTY handset with S60 platform, dual-band HSDPA, 2 megapixel camera, 2.4 inch QVGA display, Video Share, AGPS, microSD slot and possibly a 2.5mm jack and is expected on the 5th of June.

The Nokia Snapper is a low end handset with tri-band HSDPA, AGPS, 2 megapixel camera, Bluetooth 2.1 which is expected to land in August.

The Nokia Thresher and Grouper comes with S40 innards and are both HSDPA with AGPS; the Thresher has a 3.2 megapixel camera with flash while the Grouper dumps down to a 2 megapxel camera. The Nokia Grouper is expected in July while the Nokia Thresher is expected in September.

HTC Touch Pro2 now with Verizon Wireless

The latest word on the HTC Touch Pro2 is that the smartphone will now be joining Verizon Wireless according to a report over at ubergizmo.

Verizon Wireless will now join the likes of AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile USA who already offer the HTC Touch Pro2 smartphone.

There is however no word on price tag or release date for the Verizon branded HTC Touch Pro2, but with the impending landing of the new Palm Pre and a possible new iPhone in the offering, will the Verizon Touch Pro2 be able to compete?

Palm Pre Off Contract With Best Buy for Huge $849.99

The Palm Pre smartphone has a regular list price with Best Buy at a rather expensive $849.99, this price sounds somewhat extreme to me and no doubt to many.

That huge $849.99 off contract price for the Palm Pre with Best Buy is leaps and bounds away from Sprint's supposed $550 off contract price.

Could this then be a ploy by Best Buy to make sure no one will be leaving a Best Buy store with a Palm Pre in hand without a "Simply Everything" plan attached to the handset? I mean who in their right minds would fork over such a ludicrous amount?

Samsung Trinity, Pivot and Infinity head to AT&T

Today we hear that three more Samsung mobile phones are heading for AT&T courtesy of Intomobile, and are the Samsung Infinity, Samsung Pivot, and Samsung Trinity.

The Samsung Infinity is an all touch screen handset with a 3 inch WVGA display, 2 megapixel camera, HSDPA, a-GPS, media player, microSD slot and IM client and expected with AT&T on the 20th of July.

The Samsung Trinity is Samsung's 1st 2-way slider handset with both numeric keypad and QWERTY keyboard with a 2.8 inch QVGA display, 2 megapixel camera, HSDPA, a-GPS, microSD slot and media player, and expected on the 8th of August.

The Samsung Pivot is a Windows Mobile QWERTY expected on the 5th of October and features a 2.6 inch QVGA touch screen, 3 megapixel camera, HSDPA, a-GPS, WiFi and microSD slot.

KDDI Unveil Toshiba Biblio e-reader

KDDI has now unveiled a Toshiba "e-reader" and akihabara news has shown the Toshiba Biblio to the mobile space.

The Toshiba Biblio is a type of Kindel and features a 35. Inch LCDm a 5.1 megapixel camera, WiFi, ahs 7GB of onboard storage, an electronic dictionary, and slide out keyboard with numeric in portrait and QWERTY in landscape mode.

Currently there is no word on what the Toshiba Biblio will cost to purchase or when it is likely to become available but we will let you know as soon as we hear anything.

New iPhone at WWDC Almost certainly on the Cards

Apple's WWDC 2009 draws closer and with it the rumours of a new iPhone grow, but the question whether WWDC actually deliver a new iPhone seems a forgone conclusion states a report on fierce developer.

Reports say AT&T is running out of the iPhone 3G and customer service is saying they don't expect to restock. T-Mobile Australia posted a website placeholder advertising a 32GB iPhone.

There is an abundance of news and rumour and speculation all pointing heavily towards a new iPhone unveiling at WWDC. However, the most compelling thing is that Sprint is to launch the Palm Pre just 2 days before WWDC.

Apple isn't just going to stand by and let the Pre grab the attention from WWDC, so there is a strong possibility that Apple will indeed introduce a new iPhone at WWDC.

Multiple Exchange Account support on Palm Pre

The Palm Pre smartphone can sync with multiple Microsoft Exchange accounts via ActiveSync, states a report over on jkontherun.

This is a leap in technology as apparently not even Windows Mobile devices can support multiple Microsoft Exchange accounts, and the Apple iPhone only supports a single Microsoft Exchange account, and the Google branded Android platform doesn't support it either.

The news of Multiple Microsoft Exchange accounts support is mentioned in internal Sprint documentation and there is also mention of DataViz Documents To Go will be installed in ROM for viewing Microsoft Office on the Palm Pre.

iPhone Games Draw Japanese Developer Interest

According to an article on Cnet, more Japanese mobile game developers want to develop games for the Apple iPhone according to a recent survey.

The survey conducted by Japanese middleware developer CRI apparently polled 102 Japanese game developers and the results showed 18% of those polled already have games released for the iPhone.

16% are working on games for the iPhone and a further 87% have stated they are interested in developing for the iPhone platform. 64.7% of developers have said that the capacity to release in more than 80 countries is a good draw, 42.2% stated ease of purchasing via iTunes and 55.9% said it was the size of the market.

Pivotal Reduce Price of Podium in Expectation of New iPhone

The producer of Podium, the leading desktop stand for the Apple iPhone and iPod Touch, Pivotal has announced a temporary reduction in the price of the Podium in anticipation of the new iPhone 2009.

This move by Pivotal is to reduce inventory of Podium for the original iPhone and the iPhone 3G due to the expectation of Apple introducing the new iPhone in June at WWDC in San Francisco, CA.

Pivotal has implemented the reduction in price of the Poduim from $68.00 down to $48.00 and this reduction will be for a limited amount of time.
